Let me be real for a minute; about a year ago I got one of those phone calls that I would have never expected to get. I had just celebrated my wife’s birthday, and her father was fighting for his life. Our family was in survival mode, literally. It was one of those calls that hurt deeper than I ever could have imagined. In a matter of a few days, it was very clear who my real friends were and who was using me for their own personal gain. Since I am being real, it took me most of the end of 2015 to gain my confidence and remember my own personal calling.
New Years Day…. I was ready to take 2016 by the horns and not even taking the day off. We were on to planning meetings for big things. Then the phone rings and it’s my mother-in-law on the other end of the call saying, “I think we’ve lost him.” So here we are just over six months later hoping the phone doesn’t ring again. Life is full of circumstances, and we can choose to allow those circumstances to defeat us or refine, refocus, and redefine us.
Life doesn’t always go as planned. Our plans, goals, and dreams sometimes get sidelined. Now it seems like a different call is coming. Once again, Katy Perry has come through with her new song for the Olympics, RISE. The lyrics are strong, supernatural even. “I must stay conscious Through the madness and chaos So I call on my angels They say Oh, ye of so little faith Don’t doubt it, don’t doubt it Victory is in your veins You know it, you know it And you will not negotiate Just fight it, just fight it And be transformed” It sounds like something Paul would have written in the New Testament.
We live in a world that seems to be spinning out of control. Our social media feeds stay clogged with chaos around the globe and friends fighting their own battles. Every couple of years when the Olympics come around I am moved by the thousands of athletes who had big dreams and in spite of setbacks, tragedies, and injuries still show up. I can only imagine how many days they wanted they didn’t event want to show up. Almost everyone to take their field, jump in the pool, or get on the court one day had a dream, and have prepared many for years have faced setbacks that average people would have quite over. That’s what makes the champions and the best in sport.
The older I get the more I understand that success is less about talent, skill, and luck and more about consistency, just showing up, and a never quit attitude. Talent and skill only improve with consistency. This last year there have been many times when I have just wanted to call it. Life happens, and average people just accept it. Extraordinary people don’t. They push through as long as they remain aboveground. So there are still scars and wounds that may never heal, and they will be like tattoos that remind me of the journey.
Lots of amazing things have still been accomplished during this time; just not everything I hoped for. I’ve had the chance to talk to many of my inspirations and heroes on the “Making Elephants Fly” Podcast, some friends and I got to take the helm of the longest running Disney World podcast “WDW Today,” and just two weeks ago we launched a new Podcast focused on the Disney Vacation Club called “Top of the World.” It’s humbling to think that every week thousands and thousands of people are listening to get our advice, laugh, and hopefully learn something along the way.
This is not a post for me to complain. Even as Leslie and I prepare to travel to Canada to for her father’s Celebration of Life, I’m aware that these moments have been tough, yet they have brought our family closer and even this fall we are living in the now with a big family trip. I have been reminded over and over that our time is limited, and we must seize every moment we have been given. For me and this season in my journey, I just feel determined to “Rise” and live out the calling I have been created for. I’m reminded of the scene in HUGO in the clock tower of how there are no extra parts that we all have a purpose here.
So I am just wanting you to know that I am pushing and clawing, and big things are to come. It’s time to rise. It’s time to not let these moments be wasted. I may have some big asks coming your way. I may need your help, but I really believe the best is yet to come. My podcast is about to return with a vengeance with some best interviews and lots more to come. If you are like me and feeling beat down, take Katy’s advice and don’t let anyone else write your story. We are going to be hearing from Miss Perry A LOT over the next couple of weeks. I challenge you to take her advice and Rise…Victory is in your veins!
