When I’m home and not on the road, my day normally starts out by me getting something out of the freezer to make for dinner. Tonight, that is chicken. Not sure how we are going to fix it, but it’s being defrosted. Then, when I am coherent enough, I normally open my inbox to see what awaits.
Some days, I think I am on Chicken Little’s street team. (I know I am on his newsletter list.) You know what I am talking about. You have these people in your life too. The sky is always falling. The crisis is always “the one.” 99.9% of the time it’s really not that big of a deal and there is a simple solution.
It seems like the sky is falling in our Nation’s Capital. Something about a shutdown. The news media has done a fantastic job convincing us that another day of the shut down is going to lead to Armageddon. (Which would not be all that bad. That means we get another awesome Steven Tyler power ballad!) America will be just fine. If we could just get the media to shut down for a couple weeks too, that would be awesome.
News Flash: The sky is not falling. Actually in Nashville it’s clear and blue. Take a deep breath. Chances are, you are doing better than you deserve. If we choose to respond to everyone who lives in crisis mode, we may be the ones that actually collapse. Sure, bad things happen. Sure, people are going to bail. Write it down: more bad things are gonna happen. I have watched people die. I have been to places where families live that I would not even let my dog pee. Trust me, there are people fighting a crisis way worse than yours.
Maybe you are fighting for your life right now. I have several friends that are right now. If you are not, count your blessings. Don’t let Chicken Little rob you of the joy of cramming as much life into every day you can.
There will always be calls from people who are way too stressed out by things that really don’t matter all that much. Be careful not to feed the monster they are becoming. Solve the problem, remind them it’s all good and the solution is simple. Sometimes the solution is uncomfortable and disruptive. But at the end of the day, what matters is that are doing what you are created to do. Don’t let Chicken Little get in the way.
So for dinner, I’m still not sure what are going to do with that chicken, but I think we will throw Chicken Little on the grill, well done!
